Fleet Insights is a web-based platform that helps technical teams monitor vessel performance. It tracks hull and propeller efficiency, emissions compliance, and other key metrics to improve vessel's operations and lower carbon emissions.

Built by engineers, Fleet Insights lacked a user-first experience.

Built by engineers, Fleet Insights lacked a user-first experience.

Users struggled with confusing navigation and overly complex UI. Many valuable features went unnoticed or unused simply because they were hard to access or understand.

Results

Simplified navigation and cleaner layout reduced time users spent finding key modules by 30%

Users can now access key insights in under 1 minute, reducing time to decision

User research and feedback loops were introduced for the first time, helping uncover real pain points and ensuring the redesign met actual user needs

Research

As part of this project, I introduced regular user feedback into the development process and helped shift focus toward user needs in an engineer-led environment.

I started with interviews across customers, experts, and the customer success team, then created a customer journey map (CJM) to highlight key pain points and improvement opportunities.

Step 1: Simplified Navigation

Step 1: Simplified Navigation

Step 1: Simplified Navigation

One of the first and most obvious issues identified through user feedback was poor navigation.

The original left-hand menu listed all pages—modules, settings, Help Center, etc.—in no particular order, making it overwhelming and hard to use. Moreover, there was a sub-navigation that hid important pages.

I introduced a clearer structure by dividing navigation into primary and secondary sections.

Primary navigation focused on core modules, grouped by purpose (emissions compliance, technical performance, data quality).

Secondary items like settings and the Help Center were moved to the top bar, keeping them accessible without cluttering the main menu.

Result

This new structure not only improved clarity and focus but also made it easier to scale as new features are added.

After launch, we saw a 30% reduction in the time users spent finding key modules.

Step 2: Diagnostics Module

Step 2: Diagnostics Module

Step 2: Diagnostics Module

Diagnostics is a key module that helps users assess current vessel performance, understand the impact of maintenance, and decide if action is needed.

However, the UX was complex—important metrics were hard to find, charts lacked context, and settings were often misunderstood. A separate Fouling module overlapped with Diagnostics, adding to the confusion.

I redesigned Diagnostics by:

Merging Fouling into one unified module to eliminate overlap

Introducing new navigation to better organize the long list of charts

Highlighting key metrics upfront to help users quickly assess performance, maintenance impact, and potential future issues

I also clarified benchmark logic, added contextual explanations, and made critical data more discoverable.

Result

Users can now quantify the impact of a maintenance event in under 1 minute, and better support their decisions using clear insights.

Step 3: Brand Alignment

Step 3: Brand Alignment

Step 3: Brand Alignment

In August 2024, Danelec launched a new brand strategy and rebranded all platforms. However, the initial implementation was done by engineers and lacked design refinement.

The main brand colors—orange and brown—were chosen for their connection to safety, a key part of Danelec’s business. While they worked well in marketing, these colors were difficult to apply effectively in a digital product.

Result

I incorporated branding by:

Softened the brand’s brown into light beige tones for clean, neutral backgrounds

Used orange sparingly as an accent for CTAs and data visualizations to create hierarchy and maintain brand recognition

Balanced a modern, technical feel with the new Danelec identity for a cohesive user experience
